A Short Story About the King
“The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.”
Arnold Palmer
The first person to win the Masters four times was Arnold Palmer. With ninety-two career victories, he is rightly considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game, and he had an army to go with it.
In 2015, our family was on vacation in Carlsbad when the Masters was on, and we followed it even more than usual. One of my daughters had taken up golf recently, and we were rooting for Jordan Spieth, making the event particularly fun to watch.
On day two, I was reading the newspaper, and an item drew my attention. I commented to my wife, “Oh, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus hit the opening drives at the Masters.”
My twin thirteen-year-old daughters suddenly looked up from their iPhones, and one asked in surprise, obviously shared by her sister, “You mean there’s a real person named Arnold Palmer?”
It just doesn’t get better than that!
