James Einstein

“Stop trying to be someone you are not. If people don’t like you for who you are,
they’re not going to like who you are pretending to be either.”

We celebrated my birthday a couple of weeks ago with our kids. During a lull in our dinner conversation, I thought it a good moment to share something I’ve been pondering for a long time.

“I’m the reincarnation of James Dean and Albert Einstein,” I announced. Now, I expected my observation to cause a reaction, but I was a little taken aback by the explosive guffaws that followed. After all, they had both passed away in the year of my birth, so it could happen, couldn’t it? Admittedly, James Dean passed away after I was born, but I did pretty well in Algebra…I think.

Well, my assertion didn’t get much traction around our dinner table, which was just as well since I was mostly just kidding.

My real point here is that if we are honest with ourselves, we spend a lot of time trying to be something or someone else than who we really are. I’ve heard it said that if God had wanted two of someone, He would have made two.

So, I think I will stop trying to be James Dean or Albert Einstein and just be the best me I can be with the talent, gifts and opportunities that God has given me. And I think that will turn out pretty well, because they are great gifts, and I have an awesome Senior Partner to help me along.

Though I do think I look pretty cool, from just the right angle, in my new sunglasses.
