How to Ride Your Bike Really Fast!
“There can be no courage unless you’re scared.”
Eddie Rickenbacker
At fifteen, I was too young for a license, so I often rode my bike to school. There was a pedestrian tunnel on the way that was fun to ride through, which came out at the end of a short cul-de-sac.
As I shot through the tunnel one morning, there were no cars in sight. But what I didn’t see, and nearly hit, was a dog standing in the street facing in my direction. I missed him by inches, and he must have thought I was an attacker because he immediately chased me, barking wildly.
He was the largest, meanest and fastest St. Bernard I have ever seen. Aren’t they supposed to give you a drink when you are lost skiing? This one wanted to kill me and ran like a race horse on fire. I peddled as though my life depended on it, as I was sure it did.
Thankfully, the street was short, and he gave up as I rounded the end of it. You hear stories of people lifting a car to save a loved one. Given that experience, I know that’s true.
So what are we really capable of when we really want something?
